A cloudless springtime morning bore
The hatching of a robin's egg,
Into a grand and agéd oak
For which a royal thush would beg.
The first she spied within her nest:
An apple's worm and golden ring
Both took her young and eager eye
And brought her joy and made her sing.
But with her newfound treasures grasped
She found her strength was not to last
The burden great to fly with both,
Yet either's loss to her was loathe.
The worm a meal to help her grow,
The ring a gift from honored friends;
She kept them close with all her might
But from the rich the weighty rends.
so there and then she had to choose
'twas one to keep and one to lose
